Live data, the cloud and OpenAPI in smart cities

For cities to breathe freely and function flawlessly, they need a constant and reliable flow of information. This is precisely where Open Data enters the scene.

What is open data? For many, it is merely a dry term for software enthusiasts, but in reality it is a fascinating tool that can change our everyday lives. It is not just about collecting an immense amount of data and pointlessly storing information on a server. The real and more ambitious goal is to connect this data meaningfully, structure it and extract the maximum from it. That is precisely why, in our project, we approach the entire architecture with an emphasis on security and easy integration. In practice, we thus show that our development has a clear long-term vision.

Open data and their benefits

Cities generate an enormous amount of operational information every day. The aim of the Open Data concept, however, is not to broadly expose the internal agenda of the town hall or to publish sensitive documents from clerks' files. On the contrary, the essence is the transparent provision of useful data to the general public, which can concern, for example, the flow of traffic, the current occupancy of parking, air quality or other aspects of the environment. For this data to bring real value, it must be published in a format that other applications and systems can work with immediately and without modification. Issuing a static annual report in PDF is all very nice, but it is far from enough for building a truly modern infrastructure. An effective ecosystem requires dynamic Open Data, and that is why their regular updating is the standard. Residents and local businesses thus gain the opportunity to respond immediately to current events in the streets. To ensure this communication bridge, we use REST API technology in the eUrbes project, thanks to which our servers reliably and directly exchange open data with end-user applications.

Stability in the cloud

Our priority in development is above all a stable system, which is why we store all data on cloud servers. This solution guarantees the security and currency of the stored information and a stable architecture even under extreme load. It thus ensures reliability and, at the same time, room for constant improvement. To prevent outages during changes to the data structure, we version our API in order to maintain backward compatibility. With this approach, we guarantee that existing applications built on top of our eUrbes Hub will not stop working from one day to the next.

An investment in the future

Building a functioning smart city is not about a one-off deployment of expensive hardware, but about creating a sustainable data foundation for the long term. By not locking information away in closed office systems but offering it via a stable API, we directly motivate other developers to create useful applications. The chosen combination of cloud infrastructure and open data gives us the certainty that the eUrbes project will not become technologically obsolete. Instead of building digital barriers, we are thus laying reliable foundations for a city that can respond rationally and in advance to the real needs of its residents.
